SHADE

The lights are low in my apartment, a soft, melodious music drifting through the air.

I pivot to the bar.

“Drinks anyone?”

I glance at Chad who has his hand locked with Maya’s.

He motions a ‘yes’ after he looks at her.

“Wine,” he says. “For both of us.”

“Tara?”

“Yes.”

“What would you like?”

“What you have,” she says.

“Are you sure?” I ask, smiling.

She tilts her chin down, blushing.

“Okay.”

Grinning, I fix us drinks.

I hand the glasses of wine to Chad and Maya, who both turn around and stroll to the terrace.

I give Tara a glass filled with ice and two fingers of scotch before I bring my drink to my lips. I tilt it back, the alcohol hitting my throat, burning through me.

She lifts the bottom of her dress as she slides onto a barstool. She crosses her legs, and the bottom of her dress pulls open, revealing her thighs.

Dipping my gaze, I take inventory of her smooth skin and long muscles. She observes me from above the rim of her glass.

I set my drink on the counter and peel my jacket off.

Her gaze coasts down on me. It doesn’t take long before she notices the outline of my bulge straining against my fly.

I’m so hungry for her I could devour her. Her eyes glint with mischief as if she reads my mind.

She takes another swig. I do the same.

The alcohol hits her blood, turning her eyes into liquid fire. She sets her glass to the side and I do the same before I close the gap between us.

She leans back against the counter while I set my hands on in on either side of her.

Her eyes flick up to mine.

“I guess you loved our kiss in the car,” I say quietly, bringing my fingers to her face.

We look into each other’s eyes for a moment before I tilt my gaze down to her.

A faint shade of Mediterranean tan makes her skin glow. Her eyes sparkle, blue and green like the sea.

Flashbacks of our week in Italy come back to me, bright and powerful, as real as the air I breathe. The image of us entangled in the golden sand, feet away from the azure water. It makes my blood run faster as if I relive that very moment. It’s also reminds me how much I missed her legs wrapped around my waist and how hard it is to be away from her.

Her lips part slowly as she takes in my faltering smile.

For a moment, I focus on the contour of her lips.

“What is it?” she asks with a soft voice as if she knows what goes through my mind.

“Things will change, baby,” I mutter, slowly brushing her jawline with my fingers.

“What do you mean?”

“I have to do something to change things. I can’t stay away from you for that long. I don’t want to.”

A soft smile brushes her eyes.

“I feel the same,” she murmurs.

My fingers run over her brow as I brush a lock away from her face.

“But you know it’s not going to be easy,” I say quietly.
